  16. <p>The U.S.'s largest cable operator is switching to compressed-
  17. digital TV
  18. </p>
  19. <p>     The cable companies that fill our homes with more TV
  20. channels than we know what to do with have been threatening for
  21. years to adopt technology that could compound the problem
  22. tenfold. Now one of them is poised to actually do it. Tele-
  23. Communications Inc., which provides cable TV to 9 million U.S.
  24. households, announced plans to install equipment that could, in
  25. theory, deliver more than 500 channels by early 1994. TCI's
  26. announcement represents the first major consumer application of
  27. compressed-digital TV, which can squeeze 10 channels in the
  28. space currently occupied by only one. Not to be outdone,
  29. officials at rival Time Warner point out that by applying the
  30. same technology to the fiber-optic lines in its Quantum system,
  31. the 150 channels it delivers to customers in Queens, New York,
  32. could multiply to 1,500.
